Exhibition – Our First Teachers
Muswellbrook Library
5th September – 23rd September

This exhibit has been curated and created by Natasha Kellett and Rosslyn Thomson and features contemporary Aboriginal art and tools which have been collected and created. The exhibition is called ‘Our First Teachers’ as knowledge is passed down by our ancestors and is also imbedded in our veins as blood memory. It is also about truth-telling and understanding our shared history is a vital stage towards healing our future.
Bio
Tash and Roz are sisters who are proud descendants of the Gomeroi Nation, who have grown up on Wonnarua Country and are active members of their community.
Most of the work displayed has been hand crafted by Tash such as the stone tools, naturally tanned animal skins, bush medicines, wooden tools and a Gunyah (hut/ shelter). Roz created the digital artwork, woven baskets, rope and jewellery using traditional and contemporary materials. Some techniques used have been from blood memory but both sisters have been guided and mentored by Aunty Daniella Chedzey (Aunty D) a proud Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan woman of the Pilaarrkiyalu Pilar tree Mayi, and also a registered traditional owner for Mount Grenfell.
Tash and Roz were honoured to be a part of the Unsettled exhibition at the Australian Museum in Sydney in 2021. Roz weaved a number of flowers that are included in the Winhangadurinya (listening/reflecting/meditation) space of the Unsettled exhibition, which also includes artefacts from before colonisation, alongside artworks from around 100 other indigenous artists.
Unsettled means: This land was not peacefully settled – Unsettled uncovers the untold histories behind this nation’s foundation story.

AUTHOR TALK: FIONA MCARTHUR IN CONVERSATION WITH TAMARA MCWILLIAM
Muswellbrook Library
Thursday, September 8th from 10:30am

Join us at Muswellbrook Library with Australian author Fiona McArthur in conversation with Tamara McWilliam as she discusses her latest book, ‘The Opal Miner’s Daughter’, a heartwarming new medical rural romance.

About Fiona;
Drawing from her earlier life as a rural midwife, Fiona McArthur shares her love
of working with women, families and health professionals in her books. In her
compassionate, pacey fiction, her love of the Australian landscape meshes
beautifully with warm, funny, multigenerational characters as she highlights
challenges for rural and remote families, and the strength shared between women.
Happy endings are a must.

About ‘The Opal Miner’s Daughter’:
Set in the small dusty community of Lightning Ridge, the novel follows obstetrician Riley Brand who leaves the city in search of her mother who’s left her marriage to pursue a passion for opal mining. Riley accepts a short term posting in the community and assists women to pursue their baby dreams in remote and regional areas. Here she bonds with Konrad Grey, the GP working alongside her, as they are thrown together in challenging and wonderful ways.
