October 2025Welcome to the Muswellbrook Shire Libraries eNewsletter – the best way to stay up to date with all the news and events from the Muswellbrook and Denman Branches. This month Muswellbrook and Denman Libraries have a range of activities for all ages, including School Holiday Fun, Tech Savvy Seniors, the new Learn and Laugh Social Club and, exclusive screening events from the Sydney Writers Festival! Library Closure Notice
Friday October 3 and Monday October 6
Muswellbrook and Denman Libraries will be closed on Friday October 3 and Monday October 6, due to the Labour Day Public Holiday and Union Picnic Day.
Muswellbrook Library will be open on Saturday October 4 from 10am-1pm.
Both Libraries will resume regular opening hours from Tuesday October 7.
Both branch’s returns chute will be available during this time for any returns.
Introducing VOX Books
A perfect way to make learning and literacy both fun and accessible!
VOX Books offer an exciting new way to engage young readers with a seamless blend of captivating stories and immersive audio narration.
Each hardcover book features a built-in audio recording, so children can listen and read at the same time, enhancing their literacy skills, and making learning a fun adventure.
They are an all-in-one design meaning that VOX Books are fully portable. No CDs, batteries, computer, device, or internet connection are required. Readers simply push a button to listen and read.
Each title is equipped with both a headphone jack and a built-in speaker, offering the flexibility to enjoy the book solo or with others.
Tech Savvy Seniors
Are your keen to improve on your digital skills or know someone that is? Want to become a Tech Savvy Senior?!
Come along to our free Tech Savvy Seniors workshops commencing on October 28th at Muswellbrook Library where we’ll show you how to use a computer, access the internet, safely navigate online and more!
We will have weekly sessions over five weeks with guided tutorials, hands on experience and more.

Tech Savvy Seniors NSW is a partnership between the NSW Government, the State Library of NSW and Telstra.
Changes to entry at Muswellbrook Library from October 15th to 23rd
HSC examinations will commence at the Muswellbrook Library from, Wednesday 15th October until Thursday 23rd October.
As a result, there are changes to entry into our library. Please follow all directional signage when visiting and utilise our side pathway up to the front door during exams.
Please contact the library on 6543-1913 if you have any concerns or require assistance access our facilities during this time.

Exhibitions
Santa Gertrudis Collection
On Exhibit until October at the Muswellbrook Library.
Muswellbrook Library is featuring a new exhibit by local resident Ted George.
The exhibit showcases a unique collection focused on Santa Gertrudis cattle will be on display until October. The display includes historic photographs, sales brochures, and detailed breed information, all drawn from Ted’s long-standing interest and knowledge of the breed.

What’s on for Children
STORY TIME AND BABY RHYME TIME
Join us weekly at our story time and rhyme sessions filled with stories, song and creativity.
MUSWELLBROOK LIBRARY’S SESSIONS
Baby Rhyme Time: Monday mornings at 10:00AM – 10:45AM
Story Time and Craft: Thursday mornings at 10:00AM – 11:00AM
DENMAN LIBRARY’S SESSIONS
Rhyme Time sessions will run weekly on Mondays from 10:00AM.

LEGO CLUB
Join in on Lego building challenges that will make you think outside the box and push your building skills to the limit. Bookings are essential.
MUSWELLBROOK LIBRARY’S SESSIONS
Muswellbrook Library’s Lego Club is held on the first and third Mondays of each month.Monday, October 20 from 3:45PM to 4:45PM.
DENMAN LIBRARY’S SESSION
Denman Library’s Lego Club is held on the third Tuesday of each month.Tuesday, October 21 from 3:20PM to 4:20PM.

Suitable for ages 6 – 12 years.
Children under the age of 13 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
CIRCLE TIME AT MUSWELLBROOK LIBRARY
Join us at Muswellbrook Library for an interactive Circle Time session, that will be filled with movement, music and craft! Suitable for ages 0-6 years.
Circle Time sessions will be fortnightly on Tuesdays. Sessions this month will be held on Tuesdays, October 7 and 21 from 10am.
FIRE SAFETY STORY TIME AT MUSWELLBROOK LIBRARY
This session will be held on Thursday, October 16 from 10:15AM.
What’s on for Adults
SYDNEY WRITERS’ FESTIVAL AT THE STATE LIBRARY NSW – IN CONVERSATION SCREENINGS
Join us at Muswellbrook Library for a front-row seat to some of the most anticipated talks and panels from this year’s Sydney Writers’ Festival, streamed FREE from the Sydney Writers Festival thanks to the State Library NSW.
Hear from acclaimed authors, powerful storytellers, and fresh voices — all without leaving town.

Join the Upper Hunter Writers Collective at the Muswellbrook Library each month for motivation, support and feedback from others who have a passion for writing.

CHILDREN’S EARLY READING PROGRAMS
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library
Thanks to the generous support of our funding partner, AGL, eligible families can now access this program at no cost. This program delivers a free, high-quality, age-appropriate book each month to children from birth until their fifth birthday — helping to build early literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading. Children born on or after July 1, 2025, are eligible to register!

Rising Readers: 1000 Books Before School
Reading helps build social and emotional skills, sparks creativity and imagination, promotes bonding, and helps kids do well overall in school. This reading program is open for children ages 0-5 years and aims to add reading to your daily routines!!

HOME LIBRARY SERVICE
Did you know we run a free home library service to housebound members of the Muswellbrook and Denman Communities? We can pick for you, or you can use our online catalogue to make a selection of books, DVDs, CDs and Audio books that pique your interest. We also have audio readers available for members with low to no vision.
Deliveries will be made on October 14th and 28th.

These BYO device sessions are designed to help you get started on library digital collections, learn how to use your device and general tech assistance.
These sessions can be booked one-on-one for a maximum of half an hour.
